Licenseother — Muse Model License (card license_name muse-model-license). Attribution “Built with Muse Spark Open” required. If offering Model-as-a-Service and aggregate gross revenue exceeds USD 20 million in any consecutive 12 months, notify Meta and enter a separate written agreement. Section 3 does not apply to internal use, research, non-MaaS commercial activity, or using the Software as a component of a product that is not MaaS. Usage Policy says the model is not intended for individuals under 18. Limited commercial terms. Not legal advice.
Hardware~700 GB (NVFP4, Meta card/docs) — Datacenter-class VRAM. Meta docs (checked 2026-10-16) say NVFP4 is about 537 GB of weights and serves on a 4-GPU NVIDIA Blackwell node, with serving memory beyond the weights — the HF card quotes at least 700 GB VRAM for NVFP4 and about 2 TB for BF16. Docs also say BF16 is about 1.65 TB of weights and serves on eight GPUs such as 8 × B300 (budget roughly 2 TB VRAM). The Meta blog says the model is optimized to run on two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios via MLX. forkalt has not measured peak VRAM. (not independently tested)

Muse Spark Open is a gated open-weight multimodal model from Meta. Official hosts we opened on 2026-10-16: the gated card meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B, the NVFP4 sibling meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4, the collection meta-models/muse-spark-open, the Muse Model License, the launch post Introducing Muse Spark Open (15 October 2026), and dev.meta.ai docs.

This identification page hangs off ChatGPT alternatives and closed LLM APIs. Those mappings are editorial. We have no sourced quality comparison against ChatGPT.

Do not confuse this Meta card with Spark-X2.6-4B (XHToken / SparkLLM Team, ungated Apache-2.0 ~4B on-device text). Same word, different project. On-device peer compare: Spark-X2.6-4B vs LFM2.5-24B-A2B.

The Meta blog (15 October 2026) calls it a natively multimodal model with 816B total / 42B active parameters and a 1M-token context, and says weights ship under the Muse Model License with limited commercial terms. Hugging Face pipeline_tag is image-text-to-text. The blog’s “most capable US open-weight model” sentence is a vendor claim, not a forkalt ranking.

How to run (from official docs, not yet tested)

The card and dev.meta.ai/docs/muse-spark-open point at self-hosting with SGLang, vLLM, or another named runtime, or calling a hosted provider. Recommended sampling copied from the card: temperature 1.0, top_p 1.0, top_k disabled; reasoning effort high or xhigh for complex / agentic work (default xhigh). forkalt has not run these commands.

What we did not verify

Vendor benchmark tables on the card (JobBench, MCP-Atlas, GPQA Diamond, Terminal-Bench, and others versus named open-weight models) stay self-reported. Safety refusal percentages on the card are upstream. We have no sourced bake-off against ChatGPT. We have not loaded NVFP4 or BF16 on a named cluster.

FAQ

Are Muse Spark Open weights gated?

Yes. Hugging Face meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B is gated: manual (created 2026-09-15; 264 likes and 402 downloads in the 2026-10-16 API check; pipeline_tag image-text-to-text; card license “other” / license_name muse-model-license). The NVFP4 sibling meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 is also gated: manual (104 likes / 331 downloads the same day). Access requires accepting the Muse Model License form on the card. Weights are not a click-through anonymous download.

What hardware does it need?

This is datacenter-class, not a laptop checkpoint. The HF card (checked 2026-10-16) says at least 700 GB VRAM for NVFP4 and about 2 TB for BF16. Meta docs quote NVFP4 weights at about 537 GB (serve on a 4-GPU Blackwell node) and BF16 at about 1.65 TB (about 8 × B300; budget roughly 2 TB VRAM). The Meta blog (15 October 2026) says it runs on two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios via MLX. Those are vendor figures. forkalt has not measured VRAM or tokens/s.

Can I use Muse Spark Open commercially?

The LICENSE.md file is the Muse Model License (version Muse Spark Open, release date 15 October 2026). It requires prominent “Built with Muse Spark Open” attribution. Section 3: if you offer Model-as-a-Service and aggregate gross revenue of you and affiliates exceeds USD 20 million in any consecutive 12 months, you must notify Meta and enter a separate written agreement before offering the Software or Derivatives as part of that MaaS business. Section 3 does not apply to internal use, research, or commercial activity that is not MaaS, or to using the Software as a component of your own product that is not MaaS. The Usage Policy says the model is not intended for individuals under 18. Limited commercial terms. Not legal advice.

Does it match ChatGPT quality?

We do not claim that. This page identifies a gated open-weight multimodal MoE. The Meta blog’s “most capable US open-weight model” line and the card’s tables versus other named open-weight models are vendor/self-reported. There is no sourced bake-off against ChatGPT on this page.
