Switch from Photoshop to GIMP (2026 Guide)
For GIMP. Difficulty: beginner. Time: PT40M. Commands below are based on official docs, not yet tested.
Prerequisites
- A 64-bit Windows, macOS, or Linux machine that meets GIMP 3.2.6 download-page OS notes
- Acceptance that we have not mapped Photoshop shortcuts 1:1
- Layered files you can afford to duplicate before opening in GIMP
Steps
- Confirm the job is a pixel editor. GIMP is a general image manipulator (gimp.org/about). If the job is digital painting, use Krita. If the job is a RAW catalog, use darktable or RawTherapee. If you wanted a new Rust PSD editor and accept alpha, read PhotoCraft vs Photoshop instead of this switch.
- Install GIMP 3.2.6 from gimp.org. Follow How to install GIMP 3.2. Current stable on 2026-10-22 is 3.2.6. Skip Apple App Store listings. 32-bit binaries ended with the 3.2 notes.
- Duplicate the Photoshop files you will open. The GIMP 3.0 user manual (chapter 6) says only native XCF stores everything about an image except undo. Other formats keep some properties and lose others. We did not retest PSD import. Work on copies.
- Open the copy, then Save as XCF. Opening JPG/PNG/PSD imports into a GIMP project. Use Save for XCF. Use Export when you need PNG, JPEG, or another interchange format. An asterisk in the title bar means unsaved changes.
- Learn 3.2 non-destructive layers before you paint on type. GIMP 3.2 release notes: text, link, and vector layers are non-destructive. Rasterize is required before destructive edits; Revert Rasterize undoes that. Link layers can point at an external file (the notes analogize this to a linked smart object).
- If tools do nothing, walk the official stuck checklist. docs.gimp.org 3.0 chapter 4 lists floating selection, hidden selection, invisible or transparent drawable, acting outside the layer or on a group, indexed color, and missing docks. Use that chapter, not an unsourced shortcut blog.
Based on official docs, not yet tested. This is a job-split and install outline, not a claim that GIMP matches Photoshop.

1. Pick the right replacement
| If you actually wanted… | Use | Why (sourced) |
|---|---|---|
| General photo retouch / composition | GIMP 3.2.6 | gimp.org/about: photo retouching, composition, authoring |
| Digital painting, comics, concept | Krita 5.3.4.1 | krita.org positioning; Krita vs Photoshop |
| New Rust PSD editor, accept alpha | PhotoCraft v0.12.0 | README still says early alpha |
| RAW catalog / develop | darktable | darktable vs Lightroom |
| SVG / vectors as the job | Inkscape | Adobe Illustrator alternatives |
| UI frames / prototyping | Penpot / FigCraft | Figma alternatives |
| Local generative images | ComfyUI | ComfyUI vs Midjourney |
Stay on this page only for the GIMP row.
2. Install GIMP 3.2.6
Official host: gimp.org/downloads (opened 2026-10-22). Current stable 3.2.6. Details and SHA256 sums: How to install GIMP 3.2.
Documented constraints: 64-bit only (3.2 ended 32-bit binaries); Windows 10 1903+; macOS 11+; AppImage notes Debian 13+; no official Apple App Store package.
3. Files: XCF is the project, Export is interchange
From the GIMP 3.0 User Manual, chapter 6 (opened 2026-10-22):
- Opening a JPEG/PNG (and other plug-in formats) imports into GIMP’s own project.
- Save writes XCF, the only format that can store everything about an image except undo.
- Export writes PNG, JPEG, and other formats. Those keep some properties and lose others.
- An asterisk before the image name means unsaved changes.
We did not retest Photoshop PSD import quality. Duplicate the PSD, open the copy, immediately Save as XCF, and treat Export as a delivery step.
PhotoCraft’s README claims stronger PSD round-trip numbers (307/309 psd-tools). That is an upstream claim on a different, early-alpha app — PhotoCraft vs GIMP.
4. GIMP 3.2 habits that matter if you used Photoshop layers
Copied from the GIMP 3.2 release notes, not from a bake-off:
- Non-destructive layers: text, link, and vector layers. Rasterize before painting on them; Revert Rasterize clears those destructive edits.
- Link layers: File › Open as Link Layer. The notes analogize this to a linked smart object (for example an SVG edited in Inkscape).
- Vector layers: Path tool creates a path layer with stroke/fill; transforms stay non-destructive until rasterized.
- GEGL filters can sit on layers, groups, and channels. A pass-through empty group can stack filters in an adjustment-layer-like way.
- Shift+X swaps your two most recent tools.
- On-canvas type: Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Shift+Ctrl+V paste unformatted (3.2 notes).
We did not build a full Photoshop shortcut table. Do not trust unsourced “Photoshop keyboard in GIMP” posts on this site.
5. When GIMP looks frozen
The GIMP 3.0 User Manual, chapter 4 is the sourced checklist. Cause titles it lists:
- Floating selection
- Hidden selection
- Acting outside the selection
- Active drawable not visible or fully transparent
- Acting outside the layer, or on a layer group
- Indexed color mode
- Missing docks / tool options / image tabs
- JPEG export flattening transparency; GIF shifting colors
Walk that chapter before reinstalling.
6. What this guide will not invent
- No quality rank of GIMP vs Photoshop.
- No plugin counts, no speed tests, no unsourced “95% of Photoshop” claims.
- No generative-fill walkthrough (wrong product class).
- No RAW catalog migration (wrong hub).

Troubleshooting
- You expected Photoshop shortcuts to match. We have no sourced 1:1 shortcut map. GIMP’s on-canvas text editor documents Ctrl+B / Ctrl+I / Shift+Ctrl+V in the 3.2 notes. Other maps stay unverified here. Customize shortcuts in GIMP rather than assuming Photoshop’s.
- A tool does nothing. Official stuck list (3.0 manual ch. 4) — floating selection, hidden selection, invisible layer, indexed color, layer group, acting outside the selection. Check those before reinstalling.
- JPEG lost transparency. The same manual’s export notes cover JPEG without alpha. Export PNG. We did not retest.
- You needed generative fill. Neither GIMP nor PhotoCraft is a hosted image model. PhotoCraft lists generative features as a gap. See Midjourney alternatives (ComfyUI, Fooocus).
- You needed a RAW catalog, not layers. Stop this switch. Use Lightroom alternatives and darktable vs Lightroom.

FAQ
Is GIMP a drop-in Photoshop replacement?
No sourced document we opened claims feature or shortcut parity. GIMP 3.2.6 is a free GPL editor. Photoshop is Adobe’s paid Creative Cloud product. See GIMP vs Photoshop.
Can GIMP open PSD files losslessly?
The 3.0 user manual says only XCF stores everything except undo. Other formats preserve some properties and lose others. We did not retest PSD import on a named machine. Work on copies and Save as XCF.
Should I switch to PhotoCraft instead of GIMP?
PhotoCraft v0.12.0 is early alpha and its README says it is not yet a daily professional Photoshop replacement. Prefer GIMP for a mature free editor this week. See PhotoCraft vs GIMP and PhotoCraft vs Photoshop.
Did you map Photoshop shortcuts to GIMP?
No. Inventing a shortcut table would be unsourced. 3.2 notes document a few on-canvas text shortcuts and Shift+X to swap recent tools.
What about Krita?
Pick Krita 5.3.4.1 for painting, comics, or concept art. See Krita vs Photoshop and Krita vs GIMP.
