People look for a Figma alternative when they want an OSI-style license, a self-hosted design file, or a local UI editor. This hub lists tools we verified on 2026-10-20. Figma is named only to identify that product class.

Quick take.
  1. Penpot — MPL-2.0 self-hostable design platform for UI, prototypes, and design systems.
  2. FigCraft — Pure-Rust Figma-style UI design and prototyping app in the ArtCraft suite (alpha).
  3. Anatomy — Agent skill that turns a technical idea into an interactive isometric SVG machine figure.

Why these three

The 2026-10-20 check covers Penpot, FigCraft, and Anatomy.

Penpot — MPL-2.0 (LICENSE on develop, GitHub API MPL-2.0), 61,389 stars / 4,255 forks, created 2015-12-29, release 2.18.3 (2026-10-06). Self-hostable web design platform. An older forkalt sentence that said AGPL-3.0 was wrong.

FigCraft — created 2026-10-09, 2,831 stars / 1,089 forks, dual MIT OR Apache-2.0, latest release v0.7.0 (2026-10-18), README alpha (~49% vendor estimate). Same ArtCraft family as PhotoCraft and WordCraft.

Anatomy — MIT skill that emits interactive isometric SVG figures, not a multiplayer editor.

Who should switch

Limitations we actually sourced

FigCraft README: alpha; .fig is best-effort; multiplayer is a preview; the default public collab host stores files unencrypted. Penpot is a web/self-host product, not a native Photoshop-class raster editor. We did not import a production Figma file.

Setup notes

Penpot: Docker / official self-host docs, or penpot.app. FigCraft: signed v0.7.0 builds, or cargo run --release -p figcraft; fonts from craft-fonts or the system. Not run here.

License notes

Not legal advice. Penpot is MPL-2.0 (file-level copyleft), not AGPL-3.0. FigCraft is permissive dual MIT/Apache-2.0; GitHub’s API field still shows Apache-2.0 only.

What we left out

Quant-UX and Akira are commonly discussed. They do not have sourced tool pages in this pass, so they are not rows.

FAQ

What is the best open-source Figma alternative?

Among options sourced 2026-10-20, Penpot is the long-standing self-hostable web design platform (MPL-2.0, 61,389 GitHub stars, release 2.18.3). FigCraft is a new pure-Rust desktop/WASM editor (MIT OR Apache-2.0, 2,831 stars, v0.7.0, alpha, vendor estimate about 49% ready). Anatomy is a MIT skill that emits isometric SVG figures, not a multiplayer editor. “Best” depends on collab vs a local Rust app. We have no bake-off.

Can teams collaborate like in Figma?

Penpot documents real-time collaboration and self-hosting. FigCraft is offline-first; live sessions are a preview (no accounts) and the default public collab server stores files unencrypted. Anatomy is not a collab editor.

Do they import Figma files?

FigCraft’s README says .fig open is best-effort. Penpot documents SVG interchange and does not claim full .fig parity in the sources we opened. Plan for export/rebuild.

Is Penpot AGPL-3.0?

No. The LICENSE file on penpot/penpot (default branch develop, opened 2026-10-20) is Mozilla Public License 2.0. GitHub’s license API reports MPL-2.0. An older sentence on this hub that said AGPL-3.0 was wrong.
