When to choose which
- Permissive MIT weights: DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash — MIT versus Kimi K3 License MaaS threshold. Not legal advice.
- Larger total-parameter open-weight MoE (2.8T): Kimi K3 — Scale is not a quality or speed measurement.
- October 2026 Flash point-release / 1017 checkpoint: DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash — 1017 is the dated minor update. K3 is a separate model family.
- Third-party WebDev arena (open-source filter, 2026-10-18): DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-20261017 (Max) on that snapshot — Arena.ai ranks and scores. Not independently reproduced. Not a forkalt ranking.

Why this comparison exists
DeepSeek published DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 on 17 October 2026 (MIT, Hugging Face + ModelScope). The next day, Arena.ai’s Code Arena WebDev board (open-source filter) showed that Max build at open-source #1, with Kimi K3 (Max) immediately below it. That is a third-party leaderboard, labeled as such everywhere we quote it. It is not a forkalt ranking and not a ChatGPT verdict.
