Open-Source Cursor Alternative for AI Coding (2026, Free)
Identifying Cursor · Mark source

This hub lists open-source AI coding agents and extensions people compare with Cursor-class IDEs. Cursor is named only to identify that product class. We copy licenses and GitHub star counts from official repositories. We do not rank coding quality against Cursor. Rechecked 2026-10-18: CortexIDE last push was 2026-07-23; continuedev/continue is read-only.
- Cline — Open-source coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, CLI, SDK, and a desktop app.
- OpenCursor — MIT VS Code extension for agentic chat, local and cloud LLMs, semantic search, and MCP.
- Headroom — Apache-2.0 context compression layer for AI agents (library, proxy, MCP).
How we pick
- GitHub repository we could open, with a push in the 90 days before 2026-10-18 unless noted.
- License copied from that repository LICENSE file.
- AI coding features (chat, inline edit, autocomplete, or agentic mode).
- No unsourced "beats Cursor" claims.

Recheck: what was removed
CortexIDE (OpenCortexIDE/cortexide) is a real MIT Void fork (179 stars) but last push 2026-07-23. That fails the “active” bar for this hub.
Continue (continuedev/continue) is a real Apache-2.0 repo (36,236 stars, last push 2026-10-14) whose README now says it is no longer actively maintained and is read-only, with a final 2.0.0 release. Last GitHub release v2.0.0-vscode is dated 2026-06-19. It is not listed as a current alternative.
Void (voideditor/void) is archived (28,750 stars, archived: true).
Cline: Apache-2.0 agent (lead)
See Cline. Highest-star actively pushed Cursor-class agent we opened on 2026-10-18. JetBrains plugin source is not in that Apache-2.0 tree (README).
OpenCursor: MIT VS Code extension
See OpenCursor. Lightest option: install inside existing VS Code. Last push 2026-09-25 is inside the 90-day window.
NeuralInverse: niche firmware / legacy IDE
NeuralInverse (NeuralInverse/neuralinverse) is Apache-2.0, 236 stars, last push 2026-10-01. README describes Power Mode, firmware, and legacy-migration modules. Too small and specialized to lead this hub; too recently pushed to delete. Homepage listed: cloud.neuralinverse.com.
Related autonomous agents (not IDEs)
OpenHands (OpenHands/OpenHands) is MIT, 91,147 stars, last push 2026-10-17. It is an AI-driven development agent, not a Cursor-style editor. Mentioned so we do not confuse “open coding agent” with “open Cursor clone.”
How to choose
- Need an actively maintained agent with CLI and desktop: Cline.
- Need a VS Code extension only: OpenCursor.
- Need firmware / legacy modules: NeuralInverse (no dedicated page yet).
- Need Copilot-style autocomplete lists: GitHub Copilot alternatives.
- Need a context-compression layer (not an IDE): Headroom (Apache-2.0, 76,787 stars, v0.41.0, trending 2026-10-21).
- Need a multi-agent orchestrator (not a Cursor clone): Orca (MIT, 99,809 stars, v1.4.235, trending 2026-10-21).
- Need DeepSeek’s MIT plugin harness (
dsh, developer preview): DeepSeek Harness (260,528 stars, dsh-v0.2.1-rc.3, 2026-10-25). - Need a MIT agent memory layer (retain/recall/reflect; not a Cursor clone): Hindsight (56,654 stars, v1.1.0, 2026-10-31) on Mem0 alternatives.
Coding models attached to this hub (2026-10-19)
Memory layer (not an IDE): Hindsight is MIT agent memory (56,654 stars, v1.1.0) whose README names Cursor among coding-agent / provider integrations — product class, not a quality rank. See Mem0 alternatives.
These are weights, not Cursor clones. Reflection Beam is an ungated Apache-2.0 501.3B/23.4B text MoE (148 HF likes) with Mirror CLI (reflection-oss/mirror, 180 stars). Hy-Memory is Tencent’s 30B-A3B memory writer plus SDK; MemHub’s README names Cursor among apps it can import history from. Flint is Recursive’s ungated Apache-2.0 39.8B/2.5B local coding MoE (533 likes, 2026-10-23) with INT4/GGUF and Ollama; compare Flint vs Ornith-1.5-122B. Nanbeige4.3-33B is Nanbeige / BOSS Zhipin’s ungated 33B text teacher (365 likes, 2026-10-26) whose card targets agentic coding and cowork; compare Nanbeige4.3-33B vs Qwen3.8-27B. Spark-X2.6-4B is XHToken’s ungated Apache-2.0 ~4B on-device agent/coding LLM (514 likes, 2026-10-26) — not Meta Muse Spark Open; compare Spark-X2.6-4B vs LFM2.5-24B-A2B. None of these is a quality ranking against Cursor.

FAQ
Is there a free open-source Cursor alternative I can use?
Two lead rows as of 2026-10-18. Cline (cline/cline) is Apache-2.0 with 70,477 GitHub stars, last push 2026-10-18, latest release desktop-v0.0.48: an agent for VS Code, CLI, and desktop. OpenCursor (PawanOsman/OpenCursor) is MIT with 6,033 stars, last push 2026-09-25, release 0.2.0: a VS Code extension with agentic chat, MCP, and local Ollama/llama.cpp. NeuralInverse remains a niche Apache-2.0 IDE (236 stars, last push 2026-10-01) for firmware and legacy work. "Open-source" means the code is downloadable; setup varies.
Does it match Cursor quality?
We have no sourced bake-off against Cursor. Model quality depends on the provider you attach. Not a ranking on this page.
Why did you drop CortexIDE and Continue?
OpenCortexIDE/cortexide last push in the 2026-10-18 API check was 2026-07-23T15:10:04Z (MIT, 179 stars) — real, but not recently active. continuedev/continue still has 36,236 stars and Apache-2.0, but its README states the repository is no longer actively maintained and is read-only, with a final 2.0.0 release. We do not list read-only or stale repos as current alternatives.
What is the license?
Apache-2.0 on Cline (cline/cline LICENSE, 2026-10-18). MIT on OpenCursor (PawanOsman/OpenCursor LICENSE, 2026-10-18). Apache-2.0 on NeuralInverse (LICENSE.txt, 2026-10-18). Not legal advice.
Why isn't Void on this list?
voideditor/void is archived on GitHub (28,750 stars, archived true, last push 2026-06-02 in the 2026-10-18 check). It is not an active alternative.
